Custom Half Scale Dress Form
Project type
School Work
Date
Spring 2024
Location
Raleigh, NC
I created this half scale dress form using an object file from a bodyscan I participated in last year. The scan was cleaned up in AutoCAD Fusion 360 and sliced into layer templates that I used to cut out layers of half inch high density upholstery foam using a laser cutter. The layers were then stacked together with dowel rods and glue and and finished off with a felt collar to even out the shoulders and covered with cotton knit fabric.
Something I appreciate about this form compared to conventional dress forms is that the foam body allows it to move and "squish" more like an actual human body, which can be a crucial characteristic when designing for plus size bodies and/or creating negative ease garments.
